The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced significant steps to enhance access to benefits for veterans who served at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base (K2) in Uzbekistan after September 11, 2001, as well as their survivors. This initiative acknowledges the unique challenges faced by K2 veterans and aims to address their health and compensation needs.

VA to Recognize Chronic Multisymptom Illness as a Presumptive Condition
One of the critical updates is the VA’s plan to designate chronic multisymptom illness as a presumptive condition for K2 veterans. This designation simplifies the process of securing benefits, as veterans no longer need to provide detailed proof linking their condition to service at K2.
Additionally, exposures at K2 will now be formally recognized as toxic-exposure risk activities. This acknowledgment ensures that claims related to toxic exposure are processed with full consideration of the health risks associated with serving at the base.

Streamlined Claims Processing for K2 Veterans
To further support K2 veterans, the VA will conduct pre-decisional reviews of K2-related claims. This step ensures a thorough evaluation process that accounts for toxic exposures and other unique factors linked to K2 service.
Access to VA Health Care Without Disability Claims
All K2 veterans are eligible to enroll in VA health care without needing to apply for disability compensation first. This expanded access underscores the VA’s commitment to prioritizing the health and well-being of K2 veterans.
Outreach to K2 Veterans and Their Families
Approximately 16,000 veterans served at K2, and the VA is actively reaching out to this population and their survivors. Whether you are a veteran who served at K2 or a surviving family member, the VA is here to assist you with applications for VA health care, disability compensation, or survivor benefits.
