Green exercise is a term you may have heard in 2020 or 2021, and wondered what it meant?

Well, green exercise is something many of you have already been implementing into your mental and physical health routines for many years, but strengthening these routines can have a positive impact on your psychological and physical wellbeing.

Green exercise is inclusive of physical activity in natural environments. Think hiking through a mountain, running in nature, walking along the beach are all examples of green exercises.
This form of activity comes with lots of positive benefits, from decreasing stress to improving your mood overall.

“Positive effects of physical activity are widely documented, but recent research on green exercise indicates that physical activity in natural settings brings additional positive effects beyond those of indoor activity: healthier levels of blood pressure and cortisol, vitality, increased energy, psychological restoration, well-being, positive emotions, and higher motivation to participate in physical activities.”
Handbook of Environmental Psychology and Quality of Life Research

Even if working out in a gym is your choice of physical activity, it’s best to switch up routines every so often. Try implementing a green exercise into your wellness routine at least once per week. It can also help eliminate many stress factors such as anxiety, anxiousness, and bouts of depression.

Here are some examples to get you started on a green routine to elevate your health and wellness:

  • Hike at your nearest trail
  • Run along the beach
  • Walk at a park
  • Gardening
  • Kayaking
  • Biking
